Trillium, the provincial flower of Ontario, Canada.

Trillium Fields

The humble Trillium is the provincial flower of Ontario. This perennial herb comes in a variety of colours and shades of red, purple, pink, white, yellow, and green. The white variety is the one most familiar to us here in Niagara. Trillium have a distinctive appearance with three sepals and three petals, in an arrangement of six. This matches the six central stamen, which is the part of interest to pollinators.

This particular stand of Trillium was revealed to us on a property tour, Somewhere In Niagara. Trililum are fragile and ephemeral. They flower for a very short period. We were fortunate indeed to get the invitation to visit, and we thank the unnamed property owner at this undisclosed location for allowing us to see them during their brief time in the sun.
