red-tailed hawk on a tree stump

Red-Tailed Hawk

This Red-Tailed Hawk was perched atop a dead tree taking in the sun keeping a watchful eye out for lunch. Lunch not forthcoming, away it flew with a mind to look elsehwere. But not before I captured this.

The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey which inhabits most of North America, from Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members of the genus Buteo in continental North America. The Red-Tailed Hawk is one of three species colloquially known in places as the “chickenhawk”, though ironically they rarely prey on standard-sized chickens. They can be bigger than the hawk, which usually seek smaller prey.

Which is all well and good to know. Especially if you happen to be a chicken. All I know is, this critter looks pretty magnificent.
