March 4, 2025. Approaching sunset. After the working day I set forth West along the Port Colborne coast road to see what I could see. What I saw was a beautiful sunset in progress over lake Erie. But it was too far away to really enjoy the distant breakwall. That speck on the horizon was not going to be a problem. I have a drone.
This brief video captures ice around the breakwall from close up. The ice is higher than the wall in places. Lake Erie is powerful. Imagine the waves that crash against the breakwall when the water is not frozen.
It’s a half kilometre from where I stood on the shore to the breakwall. Drones are amazing. As well as saving me that walk across thin (you can see open water in the video in places) and unreliable windswept winter ice, swooping across at 20 feet altitude gave a wonderful other worldly feel to the video. Although my eyeballs and fingers were freezing you would not know it unless I told you here.
That’s all part of the behind-the-scenes magic of making movies. Hey, I do these quick videos for fun and to share with others. They are not my client work. As such, I don’t spend as much time editing or shooting as I could, but I am nothing if not committed. Frozen fingers and all. I love this region.
This is why.
