I have a love of 3D modelling. As well as my work for commercial clients, I make quirky little things that appeal to me. Including coasters, of which I have two on my desk. Also including this word cube I made some time ago for Somewhere In Niagara. My intent was to make it part of a complete branding campaign, using variations in print and video ads and putting it onto flyers.
Life got in the way and this project got put on the back burner. I came across the 3D model today. Opening it to play rekindled the ideas that made my mouth water, so I am picking up where I left off. I’ve already added other elements, made test animations, output some graphics (including this one). And I like what I see. I love being able to light and move things where I want them. Only 3D offers that.

This design, by design, will also drop seamlessly into my Youtube videos. I can use After Effects to put this (or anything else) large onto a building wall or a billboard, a hillside or a landscape. I think I will do that, for fun. Last time I did it I received calls from people thinking it was real. They asked when it had been installed as they hadn’t seen it when they passed the building. My compositing was apparently seamless. Which proved the concept. I’ve been compositing photos and videos for more than a decade so I was quite professionally pleased.
I will do more on this, at leisure. There is no rush here. This is not a client project. No deadline. I’m just having fun. And this really is fun. So I’m going to take my time and enjoy it.
