Portrait of a farmer at sunrise

I am not the only one that gets up before sunrise. But some have been working for hours, long before I pull on my socks. Respect.

But looking across this field from the comfort of my car did make me think.

Most people spend their lives working toward a goal, a career path. They either achieve it or they don’t. Either way, a so-called ‘mid-life crisis’ is not uncommon. An existential angst begins to gnaw away in the mind whispering that there must be something better. The secret is, for some there is.

Over the decades I have changed careers several times. This has not made me rich, but it has made me resilient. Open to possibilities. And happy. From manual labour to management, I have gone where my heart (and sometimes necessity) drove me.

Change is not a thing to be feared. It is inevitable. Embrace it. As said, I’ve been successful in a number of careers. Perhaps I would like to try farming next. Or at least, something I have never done. The thought is exciting. It lights up the neurons. Opens new worlds. Literally, anything is possible if you let your mind do the ‘what if’ dance. Hey, I began life on another continent.

Move over on that machine, let me try that.
