Anyone with a phone can take a great photograph. They can even edit them using any number of free apps. So… why pay for an event photographer?
Since any event has many attendees, all carrying cell phones with cameras that rarely leave their hands, it is tempting to not bother with an event photographer at all. They are expensive. It can be hard to find one whose work you like. And it’s one more hassle you just don’t need on top of everything else while planning an event. Right? Wrong. Let me talk about the one-eyed selfie.
The quality of cell phone images is often excellent, but ultimately depends on the skill of the person holding it. Which is, in fairness, uncertain. Add to that some questionable decision making. And alcohol. The majority of one-eyed selfies I have seen were taken in a bathroom mirror. Think about that. With all the fun happening at any event, who takes photos in a bathroom?
Do you really want your precious memories to be comprised of half-drunk bathroom photos? OK. Then maybe you don’t need a photographer.
On The Other Hand
On the other hand, a commercial (paid) photographer comes ready to party in a different way. They bring their A-game. Gear. Extra camera bodies. Media cards. Lenses. Lights. A game plan so they don’t miss important shots like the first kiss. And experience. Don’t forget that. They also don’t drink while working. And their focus is to get shots of you and your guests. Not themselves in a bathroom mirror.
Finally, there is skill level. Anyone can take great photos with a cell phone, that is true. But half the time, it’s luck. Especially where alcohol is involved. Or thumbs. Thumbs get in a disproportionate number of cell phone shots taken by grampa Bob. And, I’m going to hazard you will not want shots like that in the coffee table book or framed above your fireplace as a memento.
Event photography is as much art as skill. Knowing their trade, event photographers are able to play. After checking off the formal photos they prowl like hunting lions, looking in every direction at once. If you want someone that can, for example, hear an unexpected helicopter passing fast and low overhead, who can pivot on a dime while spinning camera dials without looking to get shots like this… you need an event photographer. You really do.
