Today, March 22, the Welland Canal reopens. Freight will once more flow across Lake Erie to destinations throughout Canada and the US and all parts of the Great LAkes system. Some will even go across the ocean to still further locations. Leisure craft from single mast pleasure boats to multi-deck cruise ships including the Viking fleet will also use this important waterway.
There are eight locks between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Twenty four hours a day, the canal is open to commercial and pleasure marine traffic in both directions. All of which means… the bridge is going up.
