Buffalo Skyline

This site has been quieter than usual as I recently rejoined the ranks of those looking for full time work. I seek employment (if you have anything for a project / logistics / tech wizard with software skills not seen on this site, let me know). This morning, though, I took a step away from the job hunt to enjoy a cold but clear sunrise. It was a very welcome break.

I did not feel like embracing the sub zero temperature today, so I stayed close to home and returned to one of my favourite subjects, the Clarence Street bridge in Port Colborne. The sun was peeking over the horizon as I broke out the drone. My aim was to get some sunrise video footage similar to that used in my Youtube channel trailer here. I have upgraded my drone since this was shot. The new drone has enhanced photo and video capabilities, and I wanted to see how they compared. I will be working on that video later. For now, I wanted to share this still image from the morning’s outing.

Image Of The Week

The Clarence Street bridge fascinates me. The engineering alone is mind-boggling. The way it stands against the skyline provides endless photographic opportunities. Especially with a drone. I might go out this evening as there is an almost full moon. It’s been a while since I saw that steelwork cradling the moon… but I digress.

The sun is a little off-centred in relation to the bridge at this time of year. In the video linked above the sun was directly behind it producing the silhouette as it shone through the steelwork of the bridge. Here, the sun comes in at an angle producing pleasing highlights on the steelwork. The world turns. The sun washes across the sleepy eastside scene and we see the world waking up to a new day.

On the horizon is a view Port Colborne residents rarely get to see. The skyline of Buffalo, New York, is around 40 Kilometres due west. The iconic buildings of the Buffalo skyline will be quite recognizable to anyone that knows them. Seeing this bridge and that skyline in the same shot is priceless. It’s a reminder that Canada and the U.S. are not that far apart, at least geographically. It’s a big old small world. We could hop in the car, and as the saying goes, ‘shuffle off to Buffalo’. But that will be an outing for another day. Onward.
