The Port Colborne breakwall protects the harbour and shoreline from Lake Erie waves. It also protects it from ice.
At the end of the breakwall, this automated light sits, patiently shining across the lake into darkness. When winter comes, the ice forms against and around the breakwall. The wind and waves below the surface push the ice up and onto itself, making a mountain of ice as it piles up. I think of it like the fans rushing a band when they come out of the side door of a theatre. Everything hits at once and chaos ensues as the fans fall over each other while the band tries to get away. But maybe that’s just me.
