Port Colborne Skate Park

Port Colborne skate park

The Port Colborne ‘Algoport’ combined Skate and BMX park sits just west of the Welland Canal on Mellanby Avenue. It is somewhere for kids to hang out while getting a little exercise, and, sometimes, a few bruises. It keeps them off street corners and gives them something to do that does not involve phones or screens. It also gives me something to do, when the place is empty.

I can hang out when there is nobody around and fly the drone to get some unusual but engaging angles of the place. Like the ones below.

As the skate park is designed for kids to hang out and play and has potential hazards (of all kinds), it’s under constant video surveillance, which should reassure parents. According to the City web site (thank you for the information below), “the skate park features areas for beginner, intermediate and experienced enthusiasts”. Features include (these mean nothing to me, but will to skaters and BMX riders):

  • 670 sqm of flat concrete pavement
  • 430 sqm of ramped concrete pavement
  • 88 m of round stainless steel coping
  • 75 m of square or flush stainless steel coping
  • 16 metres (4 lengths) of grind-able rail and 132 m of railings
  • 33 sqm spectator zone
  • Central fun box with a curved cut-away
  • 4 ledges
  • A pole jamb
  • 7 riser stair set
  • Cantilevered ramp
  • Roll-in
  • “Lifeboat” jump
  • “Compass”
  • Lily pad
  • Concave gap
  • Mogul
  • 2 rollers
  • High drop-in ramp
  • 3.3 m high over-vertical quarter pipe ramp
  • 2 textured “gang plank” entry paths

All I can say is that the architecture and design of the Port Colborne skate park flows beautifully when viewed from the air.
