Mohawk Lighthouse

Mohawk Lighthouse

On New Years Day, I wanted to be out exploring and my wife wanted me out of the house, so I hit the empty roads and went West.

During a national holiday there is very little traffic. Which is fantastic. Nobody honking if I’m going too slow for them. Nobody stopping to offer help if I’m parked by the roadside. All the peace I could want.

I found myself further West than I planned. The mood just took me and I kept driving, finding myself on the cliff overlooking the Mohawk lighthouse. The day was fully overcast, no sun to be seen. But enough daylight found its way through to give the scene a nice, even light. Clouds are the best softbox a photographer could ask for. Especially when they make such a fascinating backdrop as this. The Mohawk lighthouse has been abandoned for a long time now. The empty shell stands as a literal beacon, now automated. The island and the building itself is home to many birds that sadly are not here at this time of year. The bleakness of the weather is enough to send them elsewhere for the season.

From atop a cliff 2.5km away using a wind-shaken tripod, this was the one photograph I took on the 3 hour meandering expedition. And it was enough. I drove home, a happy man.
