Black and White

Grand Hermine

This black and white treatment of my photo of the Grand Hermine in Jordan harbour, Ontario, dates back to when the ship had masts. In recent years they were removed. Then, the ship herself. This is a scene that can never be revisited. The ship is gone. Which drives home the point I want to make today: Take the photo. Always, take the photo.

This one was taken in May of 2020. As I recall it was a beautiful sunny day. Two kayakers can be seen on the water coming in close to get a good view, and they give perspective on the size of the old girl. From land only one angle could be seen. Here, I sent up the drone, making a myriad others available. There is simply no better way to explore a scene than by drone. Especially if that scene involves water. As well as a 360 degree walk around, as here seen with difficulty and much paddling (or swimming), a drone gives the ability to go… up. It takes the scene from two dimensions to three. Offering a full hemisphere of photographic opportunities. Which is special. Like the Grand Hermine herself was special.

The ship has (had) a well documented history which can be found elsewhere. History is not the purpose here. This post is simply to recall with nostalgia the absence of a much loved destination location for many in the Niagara region, one which I visited often enough to consider as an old friend. There is no longer much reason to stop here. We drive on by, now.

Gone, but not forgotten, my friend. Again: Take the photo. Always.
