Though the City may sleep, the Welland Canal does not. Closing only for Winter, it operates 24/7 to keep freight flowing around the Great Lakes and beyond. Those living close to the canal can hear the automated warning siren every time the Clarence Street bridge is raised to let a ship through. Night or day, heading North or South. It’s a part of our daily life.
Here we see the Algoma Guardian, out of St. Catharines. In Port Colborne at the entrance to the Welland Canal heading in to Lock 8 below the raised road bridge, one of three in our little city. She’s going to destinations unknown, because I didn’t care to look it up. There are web sites and apps that will tell you where every ship is and where they are bound. For me that takes away the romance. All I need to know is, she’s headed North. Fare well.
